Fractures: Bone Repair

Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the procedure...

Summary

Isolated capitellum fractures are rare. This case study shows successful surgical treatment of a Hahn Steinthal fracture with open reduction and internal fixation, leading to full elbow range of motion.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Traumatology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Isolated fractures of the capitellum are uncommon injuries.
  • The Hahn Steinthal type represents a specific pattern of capitellum fracture.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present clinical and radiological findings of a rare isolated capitellum fracture.
  • To illustrate the successful operative management of this injury.

Main Methods:

  • A case report of a 31-year-old female with an isolated Hahn Steinthal capitellum fracture.
  • Treatment involved open reduction and internal fixation using mini fragment screws.
  • Postoperative immobilization for 4 weeks.

Main Results:

  • The patient achieved a full range of elbow movement 12 weeks postoperatively.

  • Radiological and clinical data supported successful fracture healing and functional recovery.
  • Conclusions:

    • Anatomical reduction and internal fixation are crucial for optimal outcomes in isolated capitellum fractures.
    • This approach ensures restoration of elbow function and stability.
