Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Histopathology
  • Electron Microscopy

Background:

  • Linear focal elastosis (LFE) is a rare, benign skin condition.
  • Characterized by asymptomatic, yellowish, linear striae, typically on the trunk.
  • Etiology and pathogenesis remain incompletely understood.

Observation:

  • Case study of an 86-year-old Japanese male presenting with LFE.
  • Lesions observed as asymptomatic yellow striae in the lumbar region.
  • Histological examination revealed massive, well-demarcated basophilic fibers with positive elastic tissue staining.

Findings:

  • Electron microscopy showed reticular/granular electron-dense materials and elastic fiber microfibril-like components.
  • Numerous mature and immature elastic fibers were present in the matrix.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evidence suggests active elastogenesis (formation of elastic fibers) within the lesions.
  • Implications:

    • The findings contribute to understanding the histopathological features of LFE.
    • Suggests LFE involves active new formation of elastic tissue.
    • Highlights common features (age, sex, lesion location) in reported LFE cases, aiding diagnosis.
