Summary

Older adults face higher risks from alcohol abuse, yet treatment options are limited. Age-specific, cognitive-behavioral approaches show positive outcomes for older alcohol abusers.

Background:

Alcohol abuse presents significant risks for older adults, increasing morbidity, mortality, healthcare utilization, and costs.
While prevalence of alcohol use disorders is lower in older adults than younger groups, it is projected to rise with the aging baby-boom generation.
There is a notable lack of research and development concerning effective treatment programs tailored for older adults with alcohol-related disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

To discuss the availability of effective treatment strategies for older adults with alcohol abuse.
To review epidemiological and outcomes research concerning alcohol abuse in the elderly population.
To highlight the need for and potential of age-specific interventions for older substance abusers.
