Summary

Sialoblastoma is a rare perinatal tumor of salivary origin presenting as neck swelling. Early consideration is vital for accurate diagnosis and management of this potentially recurrent epithelial tumor.

Background:

Sialoblastoma is an exceedingly rare epithelial tumor originating from salivary glands, predominantly diagnosed in the perinatal period.
These tumors exhibit variable biologic behavior, with documented potential for local and systemic recurrence.

Observation:

A 3-month-old infant presented with a submandibular neck swelling of insidious onset.
The swelling was initially misdiagnosed as lymph node enlargement, highlighting a diagnostic challenge.

Findings:

The case underscores the importance of considering sialoblastoma in the differential diagnosis of perinatal neck masses.
The tumor's apparent contiguity with the submandibular salivary gland was a key diagnostic clue.

Implications:

Prompt and accurate diagnosis of sialoblastoma is crucial for appropriate management and improved patient outcomes.
Further research into the biologic behavior and treatment strategies for sialoblastoma is warranted to address its recurrence potential.
