All neuromuscular blocking agents are injected intravenously because they are poorly absorbed from the GI tract. Nondepolarizing neuromuscular blockers prevent the membrane depolarization of muscle cells and inhibit muscle contraction. These are usually administered with anesthetics to achieve complete muscle relaxation.
