Summary

Postoperative immobilization is not necessary after proximal row carpectomy. This study found no significant differences in pain, range of motion, or return to work between immobilized and non-immobilized patients.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Hand and wrist surgery

Background:

  • Proximal row carpectomy (PRC) is a common wrist surgery.
  • Postoperative immobilization is traditionally recommended after PRC.
  • The necessity of immobilization for PRC outcomes is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the necessity of postoperative immobilization after proximal row carpectomy.
  • To compare outcomes between patients with and without immobilization following PRC.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective comparison of 13 patients who did not have postoperative immobilization versus 25 patients who did.
  • Outcomes assessed included pain, range of motion, and return to work.
  • Mean follow-up period was 27 months.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were observed between the immobilized and non-immobilized groups.
  • Pain levels were comparable in both groups.
  • Range of motion and return to work timelines did not differ significantly.

Conclusions:

  • Postoperative immobilization is not essential after proximal row carpectomy.
  • Surgeons may consider omitting immobilization to potentially improve patient comfort and reduce healthcare costs.
