Suctioning the Oropharyngeal Airway01:25

Suctioning the Oropharyngeal Airway

In preparing for oropharyngeal airway suctioning, a nurse must gather all necessary equipment, including a suction unit with tubing, a prepackaged suction kit, sterile gloves, water or saline for irrigation, a water-soluble lubricant, and additional personal protective equipment (such as a gown, mask, and goggles) to control infections.
After assembling the equipment, the nurse should practice hand hygiene and don appropriate PPE according to infection control guidelines to avoid the...

Tracheostomy Suctioning II: Procedure

Tracheostomy suctioning is a vital nursing procedure that involves removing secretions from the tracheostomy tube to maintain airway patency and prevent respiratory complications. Nurses need to understand the proper technique for tracheostomy suctioning to ensure patient safety and comfort. In this guide, we will outline the step-by-step process for performing tracheostomy suctioning, including preparing the sterile field, donning personal protective equipment (PPE), lubricating and connecting...

Summary

A palatal augmentation prosthesis significantly improved speech intelligibility and vowel formant values in Brazilian Portuguese speakers after glossectomy. This device helps restore speech clarity and acoustic characteristics post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Speech-Language Pathology
  • Acoustic Phonetics
  • Prosthodontics

Background:

  • Glossectomy, a surgical procedure involving tongue removal, often leads to impaired speech intelligibility.
  • Palatal augmentation prostheses are designed to compensate for anatomical deficits and improve speech production.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a palatal augmentation prosthesis on speech intelligibility in Brazilian Portuguese speakers post-glossectomy.
  • To analyze the effects of the prosthesis on acoustic spectrographic characteristics of oral vowels, specifically F1, F2, and F3 formants.

Main Methods:

  • A blinded, randomized listener judgment approach was used for speech evaluation.
  • Thirty-six patients who underwent various types of glossectomy were assessed with and without the palatal augmentation prosthesis.
  • Spontaneous speech intelligibility and spectrographic formant analysis (F1, F2, F3) of vowels were the primary outcome measures.

Main Results:

  • The palatal augmentation prosthesis led to a statistically significant improvement in spontaneous speech intelligibility and syllable identification (P < .05).
  • Significant differences were observed in F1 values for vowels /a,e,u/, F2 values for /o,ó,u/, and F3 values for /a,ó/ (P < .001).

Conclusions:

  • The palatal augmentation prosthesis effectively enhances speech intelligibility and syllable clarity for individuals following glossectomy.
  • The prosthesis positively influences vowel formant values (F1, F2, F3), bringing them closer to normal acoustic targets and improving speech production.
