    Summary

    Early harvest of maize may reduce fumonisin contamination. Fusarium ear rot infection and fumonisin levels increase as kernels mature, but early harvest with higher grain moisture can mitigate mycotoxin levels.

    Background:

    • Fusarium ear rot and fumonisin contamination pose significant threats to maize production, especially in the southeastern US.
    • A lack of highly resistant maize genotypes necessitates effective management strategies to control fumonisin contamination.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the temporal dynamics of Fusarium verticillioides infection and fumonisin contamination in maize kernels.
    • To evaluate early harvest as a potential strategy for reducing fumonisin contamination.

    Main Methods:

    • Maize ears were harvested weekly over 14 weeks from two locations in North Carolina.
    • Kernel infection by F. verticillioides and fumonisin contamination levels were quantified for each harvest.

    Main Results:

    • Kernel infection and fumonisin contamination appeared near physiological maturity and increased up to the typical North Carolina harvest date.
    • Fumonisin concentrations fluctuated after the average harvest date.
    • Early harvest, when grain moisture exceeds 25%, may reduce fumonisin contamination levels in conducive years.

    Conclusions:

    • Early harvest is a viable strategy to reduce fumonisin contamination in maize, particularly in years prone to contamination.
    • Understanding the timing of infection and contamination is crucial for implementing effective control measures.
