Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are common after aesthetic surgery. Female gender, surgical site, and prior PONV history are key risk factors, with trunk surgery posing a higher risk.
Area of Science:
- Plastic Surgery
- Anesthesiology
- Patient Safety
Background:
- Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are frequent complications following surgical procedures.
- In aesthetic surgery, PONV can lead to adverse outcomes such as hematoma, wound dehiscence, and decreased patient satisfaction.
- Identifying PONV risk factors is crucial for effective management in aesthetic surgery patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the incidence of PONV in patients undergoing aesthetic surgery.
- To identify significant risk factors associated with PONV in this patient population.
- To compare the efficacy of ondansetron and metoclopramide in PONV prevention.
Main Methods:
- A study involving 212 patients undergoing common aesthetic surgical procedures.
- Analysis of patient demographics, surgical site, and medical history to identify risk factors.
- Evaluation of antiemetic efficacy, specifically comparing ondansetron and metoclopramide.
Main Results:
- Female gender, surgical site (trunk vs. head/neck), and a history of PONV were identified as significant risk factors.
- Postoperative opiate use and history of motion sickness were not found to be significant risk factors.
- Ondansetron demonstrated greater effectiveness in preventing PONV compared to metoclopramide.
Conclusions:
- Preoperative assessment of risk factors for PONV is essential in aesthetic surgery.
- Patients identified with risk factors are suitable candidates for prophylactic antiemetic treatment.
- Effective PONV prevention strategies can significantly improve postoperative patient comfort and satisfaction.
