Summary

The prevalence of hydronephrosis in women undergoing pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery is low. Surgical repair of POP effectively resolves hydronephrosis and prevents long-term kidney complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of hydronephrosis in women undergoing surgical repair for pelvic organ prolapse (POP).

Main Methods:

  • An observational, retrospective study included 257 women with POP (grade >2) undergoing surgical repair between 2000 and 2007.
  • Patients received standard urogynecologic workup before POP repair.
  • Follow-up assessments were conducted at 3, 6, 9 months, and annually thereafter.

Main Results:

  • Preoperative hydronephrosis was identified in 5% (13/257) of patients, with a mean age of 69.2 years.
  • Of the 13 patients with hydronephrosis, 9 cases were associated with POP. Surgical repair resolved hydronephrosis in 7 patients.
