Summary

Experienced laparoscopic surgeons still face a learning curve with robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP). Operative duration and positive margin rates improved significantly with increasing RALP experience.

  • Operative time significantly decreased in three phases: first 12 cases, cases 13-189, and cases 190+.
  • Positive margin rates improved significantly from 58% (first 12) to 23% (13-189) and 9% (190+).
  • Foley catheter duration also showed significant improvement with experience.

Conclusions:

  • A learning curve exists for RALP even for experienced laparoscopic surgeons.
  • Continued improvement in operative efficiency and oncological outcomes (margin status) is observed with increasing RALP case volume.
