Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Rheumatology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Behcet's disease is a multisystemic inflammatory condition with potential for vision loss.
  • Uveitis is a common ocular manifestation of Behcet's disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe and compare clinical features of Behcet's uveitis in Taiwan.
  • To evaluate visual outcomes in patients with Behcet's uveitis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 227 patients with Behcet's uveitis at Taipei Veterans General Hospital.
  • Comparison of two patient groups based on diagnosis period: 1984-1993 (Group A) and 1994-2003 (Group B).

Main Results:

  • Uveitis affected males more frequently, with onset typically in the 3rd-4th decades for males and 2nd-5th for females.
  • Visual acuity at presentation and last visit was better in Group B, indicating slower visual deterioration over time.
  • Kaplan-Meier analysis showed significant risks of vision loss within 5, 10, and 15 years.

Conclusions:

  • Visual outcomes for Behcet's uveitis have improved in the last decade but remain a concern, particularly for males.
  • Despite treatment advances, a substantial number of patients experience rapid vision loss.
  • The incidence of new Behcet's uveitis cases has not declined.
