Background:

Social workers are integral to interdisciplinary healthcare teams, yet their education often lacks specific interdisciplinary training.
Effective collaboration is crucial for quality healthcare delivery, especially in community and rural settings.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of an interdisciplinary, community-based experiential course on health professions students, specifically social work students.
To assess the course's effectiveness in preparing students for interdisciplinary teamwork in rural healthcare.

Main Methods:

A summer course, "Quality Improvement in Rural Healthcare," was developed with faculty from social work, nutrition, medicine, nursing, and public health.
The curriculum focused on health literacy for individuals with diabetes in rural northeast Tennessee, providing a model for interdisciplinary learning.
Student attitudes toward interdisciplinary teamwork were evaluated pre- and post-course.

Main Results:

Social work students demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in their attitudes towards interdisciplinary teamwork.
The course provided a valuable experiential learning environment for developing collaborative skills.
Identified course strengths, weaknesses, obstacles, and opportunities for future curriculum enhancement were documented.

Conclusions:

Interdisciplinary experiential education can positively influence social work students' attitudes and readiness for collaborative healthcare practice.
Curriculum development should incorporate interdisciplinary components to better prepare future health professionals.
Further refinement of such programs can optimize the training for effective interdisciplinary teamwork in diverse healthcare settings.
