Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Virology

Background:

  • Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (KCE) can lead to persistent or recurrent nummuli.
  • Topical steroids are often used for ocular inflammation but may have drawbacks.

Observation:

  • Three patients with persistent nummuli post-KCE were observed.
  • Long-term, high-dose topical steroid therapy was administered.

Findings:

  • High-dose topical steroids did not resolve persistent nummuli after KCE.
  • Steroid use in KCE is associated with adverse effects, including dry eyes.

Implications:

  • Topical steroids should not be the primary treatment for KCE-related nummuli.
  • Antiviral therapies targeting adenovirus are needed for effective KCE management.
  • Future treatment strategies should prioritize antivirals over steroids in KCE.
