[My experience with posterior-segment OCT for the objective screening and follow-up of glaucoma]

OCT (optical coherence tomography) can be used for the screening and follow-up of glaucoma. Within the different analysis procedures, only retinal fiber layer analysis has been validated. Artifacts should be avoided by adhering to a rigorous technique and perfect knowledge of the case. Technical difficulties such as large cups or papillary dysversions should be well known and the results should be analyzed carefully. OCT evaluation is particularly helpful for glaucoma screening or for preperimetric glaucoma. In cases of advanced glaucoma, the weakness of the software and the relatively slow progression of glaucoma decrease the utility of OCT. OCT offers objective quantitative information on the nerve fiber layer anatomy, which should be correlated to functional alterations and risk factors of glaucoma.
