The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Context:

  • Aromatic nitro compounds are prevalent in various industrial and environmental samples.
  • Accurate quantification of these compounds is crucial for safety and regulatory compliance.

Purpose:

  • To develop a sensitive and reliable method for the microgram-scale estimation of aromatic nitro compounds.
  • To explore chemical transformations for analytical purposes.

Summary:

  • Aromatic nitro compounds are reduced to aromatic amines using iron(II) in an alkaline medium.
  • The resulting amine can be reacted with 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid to form a methylene chloride-extractable dye.
  • Alternatively, reduction with potassium borohydride produces a fluorescent o-diphenol, enabling fluorimetric quantification.

Impact:

  • This method offers a sensitive approach for determining aromatic nitro compounds at low concentrations.
  • The dual-pathway approach provides flexibility in analytical strategy.
  • Facilitates environmental monitoring and quality control applications.
