Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Ménière's disease is characterized by unilateral fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo.
  • The etiology of Ménière's disease remains incompletely understood.

Observation:

  • This study investigated the history of 93 patients diagnosed with Ménière's disease.
  • A significant proportion of patients (43%) reported prior otologic insults or systemic diseases with otologic manifestations.

Findings:

  • Forty-three percent of Ménière's disease patients had a history of specific ear injuries or systemic conditions.
  • These preceding conditions included infections, trauma, otosclerosis, and neurological disorders.
  • The Ménière's triad developed between six months and 29 years post-initial insult.

Implications:

  • Previous otologic or systemic lesions may act as triggers for developing Ménière's disease.
  • Identifying these risk factors could aid in understanding disease pathogenesis.
  • This suggests a potential for secondary Ménière's syndrome following specific insults.
