    Background:

    • Rotaviruses are a leading cause of severe diarrheal disease in infants worldwide.
    • Understanding rotavirus epidemiology in neonatal populations is crucial for infection control.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of rotavirus infections in newborn infants.
    • To assess the impact of feeding methods on rotavirus acquisition.
    • To evaluate a cell culture method for rotavirus detection.

    Main Methods:

    • Stool samples from 174 newborn babies were tested for rotaviruses between May and August 1975.
    • Infection rates were compared between breast-fed and bottle-fed infants.
    • Complement fixation tests were used to assess maternal antibody responses.
    • Faecal extracts were inoculated onto pig kidney cell cultures (IB-RS-2) and examined for rotavirus antigen using immunofluorescence after centrifugation.

    Main Results:

    • Rotaviruses were detected in 44% of newborn stools.
    • Infection was significantly less frequent in breast-fed infants (P < 0.001).
    • Only 8% of infected infants exhibited mild symptoms.
    • Maternal antibody titers showed no significant difference between groups.
    • Immunofluorescence detected rotavirus antigen in 95.5% of specimens inoculated onto cell cultures, with optimal detection after centrifugation.
