Automated Microbial Diagnostics01:24

Automated Microbial Diagnostics

Automated diagnostic analyzers have transformed clinical microbiology by providing rapid and reliable methods for pathogen identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Among these systems, the Vitek 2 is widely used because it automates the traditionally labor-intensive processes of microbial identification (ID) and antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST), delivering standardized and timely results that are essential for effective patient care.Microbial Identification with ID CardsThe...
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay01:33

Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay

In 1971, Peter Perlman and Eva Engvall developed an Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA or EIA). ELISA differs from western blot in that the assays are conducted in microtiter plates or in vivo rather than on an absorbent membrane.
There are many different types of ELISAs, but they all involve an antibody molecule whose constant region binds an enzyme, leaving the variable region free to bind its specific antigen.  Enzyme-substrate reaction allows the antigen to be visualized or quantified.

Area of Science:

  • Immunogenetics
  • Immunoinformatics
  • Biotechnology

Background:

  • The International ImMunoGeneTics information system (IMGT) was established to manage complex immunogenetics data.
  • IMGT has become a global reference due to its unique ontology, IMGT-ONTOLOGY.
  • It serves as a high-quality, integrated knowledge resource for immunogenetics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a standardized and comprehensive resource for immunogenetics data.
  • To facilitate access to integrated data on immunoglobulins, T cell receptors, and related proteins.
  • To support research and applications in various fields of immunology and biotechnology.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a unique ontology (IMGT-ONTOLOGY) for standardization.
  • Integration of data from genome, proteome, genetics, and 3D structures.
  • Creation of specialized databases (e.g., IMGT/LIGM-DB) and interactive online tools.

Main Results:

  • IMGT offers standardized access to diverse immunogenetic data for human and vertebrate species.
  • The system includes multiple databases, analysis tools, and extensive knowledge pages.
  • It covers immunoglobulins, T cell receptors, MHC, IgSF, MhcSF, and related immune proteins.

Conclusions:

  • IMGT is an essential resource for medical research, veterinary science, and biotechnology.
  • Its applications span autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, antibody engineering, and diagnostics.
  • The freely accessible IMGT system advances immunogenetics and immunoinformatics globally.
