Summary

Orthopaedic patients are more likely to experience bladder distension during surgery. Preoperative voiding does not guarantee an empty bladder, increasing perioperative risks.

  • Identifying risk factors is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Determine the incidence of perioperative bladder distension.
  • Identify predisposing factors in general and orthopaedic surgery patients.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study of 147 adult patients.
  • Bladder volumes measured via ultrasound pre- and post-surgery.
  • Comparison between orthopaedic and general surgical patients.

Main Results:

  • 22% of patients developed bladder distension (>500 ml).
  • Orthopaedic patients showed higher incidence of preoperative bladder distension.
  • Age, gender, and anesthesia time did not predict distension, but orthopaedic procedures did (OR 6.87).

Conclusions:

  • Orthopaedic surgical patients are at higher risk for perioperative bladder distension.
  • Pre-transport voiding does not ensure an empty bladder at surgery start.
  • Further research may inform preventative strategies for this patient group.
