Summary

Vaginal mesh repair for pelvic organ prolapse did not cause sexual dysfunction in women. Post-surgery, dyspareunia resolved, with most sexual issues stemming from relationship problems, not the mesh procedure.

Background:

  • Previous studies suggest high rates of dyspareunia and sexual dysfunction after vaginal mesh repair.
  • Concerns exist regarding the impact of polypropylene mesh (Apogee/Perigee) on female sexual function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate sexual function and dyspareunia in women following vaginal mesh repair.
  • To explore the role of sex therapy in addressing postoperative sexual concerns.

Main Methods:

  • A validated questionnaire assessed sexual function in 120 women before and 1 year after mesh insertion.
  • Preoperative and postoperative gynecologic examinations evaluated urogenital anatomy and function.

Main Results:

  • Dyspareunia, initially present in 15 women due to vaginal prolapse, was absent at 1-year follow-up.
  • 33.3% of patients (40 women) experienced sexual disorders unrelated to surgery, linked to partnership issues.

Conclusions:

  • Vaginal mesh repair does not negatively impact a healthy sex life.
  • Sexual function is multifactorial, extending beyond genital aspects.
  • Sexual dysfunction is infrequently associated with urogynecologic surgery.
