Summary

Background:

Suicide methods vary widely, with firearms and drug overdose being common.
The use of power tools for self-harm is infrequently documented in forensic literature.
Female suicide attempts often differ in method compared to males, with less violent means typically chosen.

Observation:

A 32-year-old female with a history of depression was found deceased.
An electric circular saw was found near the decedent's right hand.
A large, fatal neck wound indicated exsanguination as the cause of death.

Findings:

Autopsy revealed a 15.5 cm neck laceration severing major blood vessels (carotid arteries, jugular vein) and reaching the cervical vertebra.
The electric circular saw was the instrument used in the suicide.
This represents a rare case of suicide by electric saw, particularly in females.

Implications:

Highlights the need for comprehensive risk assessment in patients with depression, considering unusual methods.
Forensic pathologists must be aware of rare and unconventional suicide instruments.
This case contributes to the literature on unusual suicide methods and the importance of mental health awareness.
