Summary

A young man survived severe 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) intoxication from a single ecstasy dose, but suffered permanent brain damage. This case highlights MDMA

Background:

  • 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as ecstasy, is a recreational drug with known toxic effects.
  • Severe MDMA intoxication can lead to life-threatening complications.

Observation:

  • A 20-year-old male presented with symptoms of severe MDMA intoxication following a single ecstasy ingestion.
  • The patient exhibited hyperthermia, convulsions, disseminated intravascular coagulation, rhabdomyolysis, and renal failure.

Findings:

  • Toxicological analysis confirmed a toxic/fatal level of MDMA 12 hours post-ingestion.
  • Despite survival, the patient sustained severe, irreversible brain damage.
