Thumb amputation due to burns significantly impacts hand function. An opposition splint improved perceived disability and hand function over 15 months in a case study.

  • Combined burn and partial thumb amputation leads to significant functional impairment, as the thumb accounts for 40% of hand function.
  • Evaluating functional deficits after severe hand trauma is critical for patient outcomes.

Observation:

  • This case report details the use of a thumb opposition splint following a burn-induced partial thumb amputation.
  • Disability and impairment were measured at multiple time points (3, 6, 8, and 15 months) post-injury, both with and without the splint.

Findings:

  • The DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) scores indicated a substantial difference in disability when using the splint compared to not using it.
  • Observed differences in DASH scores were 25 at 3 months, 16 at 6 months, 10 at 8 months, and 12 at 15 months, demonstrating progressive improvement.
