Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate basal serum prolactin levels in patients diagnosed with HLA-B27-associated uveitis.
- To compare prolactin levels between patients and healthy controls.
Main Methods:
- A prospective, nonrandomized comparative study included 33 patients with HLA-B27-associated uveitis and 30 healthy controls.
- Serum prolactin levels were measured using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay.
- Data on age, systemic disease, treatment, and uveitis activity were collected.
Main Results:
- Patients with HLA-B27-associated uveitis exhibited significantly higher serum prolactin levels (mean=15.84 ng/mL) compared to controls (mean=11.50 ng/mL) (p=0.026).
- Elevated prolactin levels were also observed in subgroups with arthritic disease (mean=17.21 ng/mL) and ankylosing spondylitis (mean=17.65 ng/mL).
- Higher prolactin levels correlated with autoimmune features but not with systemic treatment or uveitis disease activity.
Conclusions:
- Elevated serum prolactin may be implicated in the pathogenesis of HLA-B27-associated uveitis and its related arthritic subgroups.
- Serum prolactin levels do not appear to correlate with disease activity in this patient cohort.
