Summary

Elderly patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can achieve good outcomes with careful surgical selection. Lung resection should be considered, as surgery offers the best results for resectable NSCLC in older adults.

Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Thoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is increasingly prevalent in the aging population.
  • Patient age is an independent prognostic factor for postoperative survival in NSCLC.
  • Lung resection is the primary treatment for early-stage NSCLC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the role and outcomes of surgical intervention for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in elderly patients.
  • To emphasize the importance of careful patient selection and perioperative care in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • Review of treatment strategies for NSCLC in elderly patients.
  • Analysis of surgical candidacy and outcomes based on age and disease stage.
  • Comparison of survival rates between different treatment modalities and surgical procedures.

Thoracoscopic Extended Right Middle Plus Lower Sleeve Lobectomy for Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer

Published on: February 27, 2026

Main Results:

  • Careful evaluation and selection are crucial for elderly NSCLC patients undergoing surgery.
  • Surgery offers the best results for resectable NSCLC, with a 5-year survival rate exceeding 40% in octogenarians.
  • Pneumonectomy significantly lowers survival rates (around 10%) in this age group.

Conclusions:

  • Age alone should not preclude elderly patients from lung resection for NSCLC.
  • Elderly patients with resectable NSCLC should be offered optimal treatment, including surgery.
  • Comprehensive preoperative preparation and postoperative care are vital for successful outcomes in elderly patients undergoing thoracic surgery.
