Disorders of the Female Reproductive System01:24

Disorders of the Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system can be affected by several disorders, including Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), endometriosis, and various forms of cancer. PMS and PMDD are cyclical conditions that cause physical and emotional distress, with symptoms that include edema, mood swings, and food cravings. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS characterized by increased symptom severity that peaks during the luteal phase and tends to improve or resolve shortly after...

Mitral Valve Prolapse III: Nursing Management

The nursing management of Mitral Valve Prolapse, or MVP, centers around patient education, symptom monitoring, and lifestyle modifications.Patient Education on MVP Diagnosis and Heredity: Nurses should provide comprehensive education about MVP, a condition where the mitral valve does not close appropriately during heartbeats. This education often includes the condition's pathophysiology, symptoms, and potential complications, like arrhythmias or mitral regurgitation. Though not fully...
Teratogenicity01:07

Teratogenicity

The ability of a drug to produce structural deformations and functional abnormalities in the developing embryo or the fetus is called teratogenicity, and the drug producing this effect is known as a teratogen. Teratogenic effects include stillbirth, miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction, and neurocognitive delay. A teratogen may affect the embryo at different stages of development, which is important in determining the type and extent of the damage. During blastocyst formation, the early...
Tumor Progression02:07

Tumor Progression

Tumor progression is a phenomenon where the pre-formed tumor acquires successive mutations to become clinically more aggressive and malignant. In the 1950s, Foulds first described the stepwise progression of cancer cells through successive stages.
Colon cancer is one of the best-documented examples of tumor progression. Early mutation in the APC gene in colon cells causes a small growth on the colon wall called a polyp. With time, this polyp grows into a benign, pre-cancerous tumor. Further...

Summary

Pregnancy-associated breast cancer is rare but often diagnosed at advanced stages. Early detection through prenatal breast exams is crucial for better outcomes in pregnant patients.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Medical Diagnostics

Background:

  • Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is a rare but aggressive condition.
  • Early detection and diagnosis of PABC are challenging due to physiological breast changes during pregnancy.

Observation:

  • A retrospective review of 5 PABC cases over 5 years revealed a prevalence of 2.27%.
  • Patients presented at a median age of 33 years, with diagnoses occurring as early as the sixth gestational week.
  • The majority of cases (3/5) were diagnosed at Stage IIIA, with extensive lymph node involvement (≥6 positive nodes) and Grade III disease.

Findings:

  • Despite early detection in pregnancy, PABC patients frequently present with advanced disease.
  • The advanced stage at diagnosis mirrors that of non-pregnant women in the region, suggesting PABC may be an overlooked condition exacerbated by pregnancy.

Implications:

  • Obstetricians should incorporate thorough breast examinations into routine prenatal care.
  • Prompt referral of any suspicious breast findings during pregnancy is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment.
  • Increased awareness and screening can improve outcomes for PABC patients.
