Integrating evidence-based complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) education throughout pharmacy school improved students' knowledge and resource use. Earlier integration, starting in the first year, was preferred by students.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacy Education
- Integrative Medicine
Background:
- Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is increasingly relevant in healthcare.
- Pharmacy curricula need to address evidence-based CAM to prepare future pharmacists.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the impact of integrating evidence-based CAM education into a pharmacy program.
- To evaluate student knowledge and resource utilization regarding CAM.
Main Methods:
- Evidence-based CAM content was woven into the third, fourth, and fifth years of a pharmacy curriculum.
- An introductory CAM module was introduced in the third year.
- CAM topics were integrated into clinical lectures and case studies in later years.
Main Results:
- Student knowledge of CAM and use of evidence-based CAM resources significantly increased.
- A majority of fourth-year students desired more comprehensive CAM education.
- Students favored earlier curriculum integration of CAM, ideally starting in year one.
Conclusions:
- A multi-year, integrated approach to teaching evidence-based CAM enhances pharmacy students' knowledge and application.
- Curriculum design should consider student preference for earlier and more extensive CAM education.
