Background:

Migration of earning members, especially to Gulf States, is prevalent.
Families left behind experience significant emotional and psychological challenges.
The impact on children is often overlooked compared to the spouse left behind.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the effects of parental migration on families, with a specific focus on children left behind.
To compare the psychological maladjustment in children of migrant families with a control group.

Main Methods:

A study group of 25 families seeking psychiatric help for a member was selected.
A control group of 12 non-migrant families attending the out-patient department was used for comparison.
Assessment of recent maladjustment in children from both groups.

Main Results:

88% of migrant families reported statistically significant recent maladjustment in 30% of their children.
The control group showed maladjustment in 10% of their children.
Wives faced the major burden, but the psychological damage to children was substantial and less appreciated.

Conclusions:

Parental migration leads to considerable emotional hardship and recent maladjustment in children left behind.
The psychological impact on children is significant and warrants greater attention.
Future personality effects on children may manifest later in life.
