Understanding Self-Concept01:20

Understanding Self-Concept

The self-concept encompasses individuals' beliefs about themselves, structured through cognitive frameworks known as self-schemas. These schemas function as mental representations of specific traits or behaviors, influencing how self-relevant information is perceived, processed, and remembered. For example, individuals who are schematic for body weight are more likely to interpret routine experiences—such as dining out or shopping—through the lens of that trait. Conversely, those aschematic for...
Understanding the Self01:28

Understanding the Self

The self is a central aspect of human identity, encompassing an individual’s beliefs, emotions, perceptions, and experiences. It is a cognitive and psychological construct that enables individuals to interpret their traits and behaviors, influencing how they perceive themselves and interact with the world. While personality consists of stable and enduring characteristics, the self is shaped by self-perception and social experiences. This distinction highlights the dynamic nature of the self,...
Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...
Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.
Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.
Self-Concept01:19

Self-Concept

Self-concept is the cognitive and emotional understanding individuals hold about their identity. It evolves through various developmental stages, beginning in infancy and maturing as children grow. This concept influences how individuals perceive their abilities, interact with others, and manage challenges throughout life.
Infancy and Emerging Recognition
During infancy, self-concept is virtually nonexistent. Babies do not distinguish themselves as separate entities and often mistake their...

Summary

Self-mutilation is intentionally destroying tissue to shift emotional pain to physical pain. This coping mechanism, often linked to impaired skills and stress, can become an addictive cycle of relief and self-hate.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing
  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Increased interest in self-mutilation despite limited conceptual development.
  • Need for a well-defined concept to guide nursing research and interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define and describe self-mutilation through concept analysis.
  • To establish a theoretical definition for nursing practice.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive literature review of health, psychology, and education journals up to April 2007.
  • Application of Walker and Avant's concept analysis strategy.
  • Identification of defining attributes, antecedents, and consequences.

Main Results:

  • Self-mutilation defined as intentional tissue destruction to manage overwhelming emotional pain.

  • Antecedents include impaired coping skills and unhealthy stress responses.
  • Risk factors may include White race, adolescent age, female sex, and history of child sexual abuse.
  • The act provides temporary emotional control and pain diversion, but can lead to an addictive cycle of relief, shame, and self-hate.
  • Conclusions:

    • A theoretical definition of self-mutilation provides a foundation for nursing interventions.
    • Enables nurses to offer competent care for self-inflicted injuries.
    • Highlights the complex cycle of emotional pain, physical relief, and negative psychological outcomes.
