Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To achieve consensus on operational definitions for Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE).
  • To establish a conceptual framework for classifying FCE terminology.
  • To address the problem of inconsistent terminology in the field of FCE.

Main Methods:

  • A three-round Delphi survey was administered to international FCE experts.
  • Experts were selected based on significant publication records or development of FCE methods.
  • Consensus was defined as agreement by 75% or more of the participating experts.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-two international experts from six countries participated.
  • Consensus was achieved on 9 out of 20 conceptual framework statements and 10 out of 19 definitions.
  • Experts agreed to adopt the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as the conceptual framework for FCE terminology.

Conclusions:

  • Consensus was reached on many FCE terms and the use of the ICF framework.
  • No single definition for FCE was agreed upon, with two definitions remaining.
  • Future research should utilize agreed-upon terms, the ICF framework, and clearly state the FCE definition employed.
