Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the impact of Vancouver's supervised injection facility on survival rates.
  • To assess the effect of the facility on HIV and hepatitis C virus infection rates.
  • To evaluate the facility's role in methadone maintenance treatment referrals and associated healthcare costs.

Main Methods:

  • A 10-year simulation model of Vancouver's population, including injection drug users.
  • Comparison of a scenario with a SIF versus a scenario without a SIF but with other harm reduction interventions.
  • Inclusion of decreased needle sharing, increased safe injection practices, and increased methadone referrals as key effects.

Main Results:

  • The SIF was associated with nearly $14 million in net savings and 920 life-years gained, primarily from reduced needle sharing.
  • Including increased safe injection practices raised savings to over $20 million and 1070 life-years.
