Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Primary angiosarcoma of the spleen is an exceedingly rare and aggressive vascular neoplasm.
  • This malignancy is characterized by a high metastatic potential and a poor prognosis.

Observation:

  • A case presentation of a 79-year-old female with spleen rupture secondary to primary angiosarcoma.
  • The patient's symptoms were non-specific, delaying diagnosis.
  • Histological examination post-splenectomy confirmed the diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Primary splenic angiosarcoma is associated with a high mortality rate.
  • Limited data exists regarding optimal adjuvant or palliative treatment strategies.
  • Chemotherapy and radiotherapy protocols for this condition are not established.

Implications:

  • Prompt splenectomy before tumor rupture may be crucial for improving long-term patient outcomes.
  • Further research is needed to establish treatment guidelines for primary splenic angiosarcoma.
