Summary

This study introduces a novel modification to the Brostrom procedure for lateral ankle instability. By placing anchors in the talus instead of the fibula, it aims for a more anatomical ligament reconstruction.

Ankle Joint

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • Lateral ankle instability is a common condition often treated with the modified Brostrom procedure.
  • Existing variations of the Brostrom procedure involve differences in anchor placement and suture techniques.
  • Anatomical reconstruction of lateral ankle ligaments is crucial for successful treatment outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate a modified Brostrom procedure using a bone screw anchor placed in the lateral shoulder of the talus.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of this novel anchor placement for anatomical reconstruction of lateral ankle ligaments.

Main Methods:

  • A modified Brostrom procedure was performed.
  • A bone screw anchor was placed in the lateral shoulder of the talus.

  • This technique was compared to the traditional anchor placement at the lateral malleolus.
  • Main Results:

    • The proposed technique offers an alternative anchor placement for Brostrom procedure.
    • This modification aims for a more direct anatomical repair of the lateral ankle ligaments.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified Brostrom procedure with talar anchor placement presents a potentially valuable alternative for treating lateral ankle instability.
    • Further research is warranted to establish the long-term clinical outcomes and advantages of this technique.
