Most women lack knowledge about menopause symptoms and effects, often viewing it as natural aging. Despite experiencing symptoms like backache and insomnia, many do not seek medical consultation due to lack of awareness and financial constraints.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Health
- Women's Health
- Menopause Management
Background:
- Menopause is a significant life transition for women.
- Understanding women's knowledge and attitudes towards menopause is crucial for effective healthcare.
- Postmenopausal symptoms can impact quality of life.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess women's knowledge and attitudes regarding menopause.
- To identify common symptoms experienced by postmenopausal women.
- To explore factors influencing healthcare-seeking behavior for menopausal symptoms.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional survey of 863 women aged 42-80.
- Data collected via semi-structured questionnaires.
- Statistical analysis performed using SPSS version 11.0.
Main Results:
- 84.24% experienced natural menopause; 15.75% had surgical menopause.
- 78.79% had limited knowledge of menopause; 15.8% understood its effects and symptoms.
- Common symptoms included backache (75.66%), body aches (66.74%), insomnia (63.44%), and memory loss (62.10%).
- Only 31.86% consulted a doctor for symptoms, with lack of awareness and poverty cited as barriers.
- Hypertension (20.85%) and Diabetes Mellitus (24.9%) were prevalent comorbidities.
Conclusions:
- A significant majority of women demonstrate poor awareness of menopausal symptoms and health implications.
- Menopause is largely perceived as a natural aging process, not a condition requiring medical attention.
- Limited awareness and socioeconomic factors, such as poverty, hinder women from seeking professional medical advice for menopausal symptoms.

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH release.
