Cancer Prevention

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. Summary

High dietary intake of selenium and isoflavones may offer greater prostate cancer chemoprevention when combined. This study in rats suggests synergistic effects on androgen-regulated gene expression for enhanced cancer prevention.

Background:

  • High dietary selenium and soybean isoflavones are linked to reduced prostate cancer risk.
  • Both selenium and isoflavones influence androgen-regulated gene expression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the combined effects of selenium and isoflavones on androgen-regulated gene expression in rat prostate.
  • To determine if combined supplementation enhances chemopreventive potential.

Main Methods:

  • Male rats were fed diets with adequate or high selenium and low or high isoflavones (2x2 factorial design).
  • Gene expression analysis focused on androgen receptor and related genes in prostate tissue.
  • Enzyme activities of glutathione peroxidase and 5alpha reductase were also measured.

Main Results:

  • High selenium intake reduced androgen receptor, Dhcr24, and Abcc4 expression.
  • High isoflavone intake decreased Facl3, Gucy1a3, and Akr1c9 expression.
  • Combined high selenium/high isoflavones showed a greater inhibitory effect on Abcc4 expression and reduced 5alpha reductase activity.

Conclusions:

  • Combined high selenium and high isoflavones may offer superior chemopreventive effects compared to individual supplementation.
  • Synergistic interactions between selenium and isoflavones influence key genes in prostate cancer pathways.
