Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Endoscopic Procedures I: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy

An Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a diagnostic procedure in which an endoscopist uses a flexible, lighted endoscope to visualize the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The procedure includes visualizing the oropharynx, esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum.
During an EGD, the endoscope can be used to:

Summary

Bariatric surgery can now be performed safely using Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) visualization. This minimally invasive technique offers comparable results to traditional laparoscopic bariatric procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical innovation
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) is an emerging surgical approach.
  • NOTES involves performing procedures through natural orifices, avoiding skin incisions.
  • This study aimed to validate NOTES for bariatric procedures at two international institutions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate the feasibility and safety of bariatric procedures using NOTES visualization.
  • To establish bariatric NOTES as a viable alternative to conventional laparoscopic surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Vertical gastrectomy and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were performed in a porcine model.
  • Procedures utilized vaginal route visualization for NOTES implementation.

Main Results:

  • Laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy was successfully completed using NOTES visualization in a porcine model.
  • The procedure was performed with a high degree of safety.

Conclusions:

  • Bariatric procedures can be effectively performed using NOTES visualization.
  • NOTES-assisted bariatric surgery yields results comparable to established laparoscopic techniques.
