Laryngeal sarcoidosis detected by FDG positron emission tomography

Abstract:
Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) has been widely used in the assessment of malignancy. However, FDG is not tumor-specific and may be taken up by nonmalignant conditions such as sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease and extrapulmonary lesions are also present. However, laryngeal sarcoidosis is a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary sarcoidosis. A 60-year-old man with a history of previous sarcoidosis presented with hoarseness. PET imaging demonstrated increased FDG uptake in the larynx. The histologic examination revealed laryngeal sarcoidosis. We report a case of laryngeal sarcoidosis and emphasize the role of FDG PET.
