Background:

Informed consent is mandatory for human subject research in Brazil per Resolution 196/96.
This process requires a specific, structured approach for obtaining consent.
Understanding participant perspectives is crucial for refining consent procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore women's opinions on optimal informed consent processes.
To identify preferences for conducting consent when inviting women to contraceptive method studies.

Main Methods:

Eight focus groups were conducted with 51 women in Campinas.
Participants were women in or recently involved in women's health clinical trials.
Thematic analysis was performed on recorded and transcribed discussions.

Main Results:

Participants favored consent discussions led by research team members, not the principal investigator.
Information should be provided both orally and in writing, individually and in groups.
Full disclosure of risks, side effects, and long-term effects is essential; audiovisual aids were recommended.

Conclusions:

The informed consent process is key to establishing a strong investigator-participant relationship.
Participant expectations align with existing regulatory requirements for informed consent.
Utilizing audiovisual aids can significantly enhance participant comprehension.
