  • Interpositional vein grafting is standard for vascular defects but technically demanding.
  • Classical suture anastomosis presents challenges, particularly for novice microsurgeons.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a new silastic tube-assisted suture anastomosis technique for autogenous vein grafting.
  • To assess the impact of this technique on operative time and graft patency in rats.

Main Methods:

  • A silastic tube was used temporarily during suture anastomosis in an experimental group (n=10).
  • A control group (n=10) underwent classical suture anastomosis without the device.
  • Both experienced and inexperienced microsurgeons performed procedures on rats.

Main Results:

  • For experienced surgeons, the silastic tube technique significantly reduced operative time without affecting patency.
  • For inexperienced surgeons, the technique significantly decreased operative time and significantly enhanced graft patency.
  • The method prevents back-wall biting during microvascular anastomosis.

Conclusions:

  • Temporary silastic tube-assisted anastomosis is a practical modification for microvascular vein grafting.
  • This technique enhances speed, ease, and patency, particularly benefiting inexperienced microsurgeons.
