Genetic Screens02:46

Genetic Screens

Genetic screens are tools used to identify genes and mutations responsible for phenotypes of interest. Genetic screens help identify individuals or a group of people at risk of developing  genetic diseases and help them with early intervention, targeted therapy, and reproductive options.
Forward genetic screens
Forward or “classical” genetic screens involve creating random mutations in an organism’s DNA using radiation, mutagens, or insertion of additional bases, which result in visible changes...
Preventive Healthcare Services01:30

Preventive Healthcare Services

Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Summary

Early diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is crucial. While its impact on asymptomatic patients is unknown, prompt intervention may improve outcomes for PAH.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Pulmonary hypertension diagnosis involves symptom evaluation and screening.
  • Echocardiography is key for diagnosing pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
  • Early detection of asymptomatic PAH remains a challenge.

Observation:

  • Review of diagnostic strategies for pulmonary hypertension.
  • Focus on echocardiographic diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
  • Consideration of incidental findings in diagnosis.

Findings:

  • The benefit of early diagnosis for asymptomatic PAH is currently unknown.
  • New oral compounds and lifestyle management show potential for improving PAH prognosis.
  • Multidisciplinary approaches are vital for timely PAH diagnosis.
