Background:

  • Decompression retinopathy is a rare but significant complication following ocular surgery.
  • Understanding its pathogenesis is crucial for preventing vision loss.

Observation:

  • Two cases of decompression retinopathy are presented following combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C and pars plana vitrectomy-lensectomy.
  • Retinal hemorrhages were observed in one eye after the initial surgery.

Findings:

  • Postoperative hypotony was not present in either eye initially.
  • The contralateral eye of the congenital glaucoma patient, operated a week later, did not develop decompression retinopathy despite experiencing hypotony.

Implications:

  • The findings suggest that factors beyond hypotony, such as Valsalva maneuver, may play a role in decompression retinopathy.
  • Further research into the multifactorial etiology of this condition is warranted to improve patient outcomes.
