Relationship between noninvasively measured endothelial function and peripheral arterial disease

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients exhibit endothelial dysfunction, but brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (BAFMD) does not correlate with disease severity. This finding suggests other factors influence PAD progression beyond endothelial impairment.

- The correlation between ankle-brachial index and BAFMD was weak and not statistically significant (r = .1; P = .49).
Conclusions:
- Patients with PAD demonstrate impaired endothelial function.
- Endothelial dysfunction, as assessed by BAFMD, does not appear to be a determining factor for the clinical severity of PAD.
