Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Laser Technology

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) significantly impacts lower urinary tract symptoms.
  • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a traditional treatment with associated risks.
  • Photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) has emerged as an alternative therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current clinical and urodynamic data on PVP.
  • To report on the introduction of the 120W GreenLight laser (GLL) system.
  • To assess PVP's efficacy and safety, particularly in high-risk patients.

Main Methods:

  • Review of published clinical studies and urodynamic data.
  • Analysis of outcomes following PVP, including with the 120W GLL system.

  • Comparison of PVP with TURP and other prostatectomy techniques.
  • Main Results:

    • PVP is an efficacious treatment for BPH-related lower urinary tract symptoms.
    • Improved urodynamic findings are observed post-GLL treatment.
    • PVP demonstrates safety in high-risk patients and can be cost-effective.
    • The 120W GLL system introduces new training and operative demands.

    Conclusions:

    • PVP yields clinical results comparable to TURP with lower operative risks.
    • Enhanced urodynamic parameters support the clinical benefits of PVP.
    • The advantages of the 120W GLL system require validation in larger trials.
