Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Maternal mortality has been historically documented in Denmark through local and national reports.
  • Analyzing national medical registries provides a comprehensive overview of pregnancy-related deaths.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze pregnancy-related deaths in Denmark from 1985-1994.
  • To classify these deaths using the UK Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) criteria.

Main Methods:

  • Data from Danish medical registries, death certificates, and ICD-10 codes were used to identify deaths within 12 months of pregnancy.
  • Cases were classified using the UK CEMD system and evaluated by an audit group.

Main Results:

  • 311 maternal deaths were classified. 92 deaths occurred within 42 days of pregnancy termination.
  • Hypertensive disorders were the primary cause of direct maternal deaths. The maternal mortality rate was 9.8 per 100,000 maternities.
  • Late deaths (>42 days) were predominantly indirect or fortuitous.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first systematic report on maternal mortality in Denmark using national registries.
  • The maternal mortality rate is comparable to other developed nations.
  • Prospective registration and registry linkage are recommended for future completeness and evaluation.
