Summary

Breastfeeding helps reduce postpartum weight retention (PPWR) for most women. Exclusive breastfeeding for six months can eliminate PPWR for women with a gestational weight gain of about 12 kg.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of breastfeeding on postpartum weight retention (PPWR).
  • To assess if breastfeeding duration and intensity influence PPWR in a population with high breastfeeding rates.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the Danish National Birth Cohort, including over 36,000 women at 6 months postpartum.
  • Regression analyses adjusted for prepregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain (GWG) to evaluate breastfeeding's effect on PPWR at 6 and 18 months postpartum.

  • Gestational weight gain (GWG) was positively associated with PPWR.
