Summary

Discoid lupus erythematosus rarely affects eyelids, causing chronic blepharitis. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent complications from this rare skin condition, especially when isolated to the eyelids.

Background:

Chronic lupus erythematosus (CLE) commonly presents on facial skin, ears, and scalp.
Eyelid involvement, manifesting as chronic blepharitis, is an infrequent presentation of CLE.

Observation:

This report details six cases of DLE presenting with concurrent facial and ear lesions.
All six patients exhibited eyelid involvement, manifesting as chronic blepharitis.
Lower eyelid lateral thirds were the most frequently affected areas.

Findings:

Blepharitis is an uncommon but significant finding in DLE.
Isolated eyelid involvement can delay DLE diagnosis, potentially leading to complications.
The study underscores the association between facial/ear DLE and eyelid inflammation.

Implications:

Increased awareness of blepharitis as a potential DLE symptom is crucial for timely diagnosis.
Early recognition can prevent diagnostic delays and subsequent complications.
Ophthalmologists and dermatologists should consider DLE in patients with refractory blepharitis and characteristic skin lesions.
