Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics
  • Dental Implantology
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Continuous, low orthodontic forces are ideal for tooth intrusion.
  • Osseointegrated implants offer a stable anchorage solution for intrusive forces.
  • Supererupted maxillary molars present a challenge in orthodontic treatment planning.

Observation:

  • A novel method utilizing interarch intrusion mechanics with implants was employed to intrude supererupted maxillary molars.
  • Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) was used to assess the stability of anchor implants compared to control implants.
  • Marginal bone height was monitored radiographically throughout the intrusion period.

Findings:

  • The described method successfully intruded supererupted maxillary molars by 2.2 mm over 12 months.

  • Implant stability quotient values of anchored implants exhibited changes during the initial four months of intrusion.
  • No complications or abnormalities were observed in the intruded teeth or anchor implants.
  • Implications:

    • This case demonstrates a viable method for intruding molars using implant-supported anchorage.
    • Further clinical studies are necessary to validate the reliability and optimize force control for this technique.
    • Understanding implant stability dynamics during orthodontic intrusion is crucial for treatment success.
