Summary

Post-transfusion hepatitis (PTH) is a concern in Venezuela. This study found PTH rates of 3.8% for Hepatitis B virus and 2.7% for non-A, non-B hepatitis, recommending donor screening to improve blood safety.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Transfusion Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Limited data exists on post-transfusion hepatitis (PTH) in Venezuela.
  • Blood transfusions are a potential route for viral transmission.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively investigate the incidence of PTH in Venezuelan patients.
  • To identify risk factors and recommend strategies for preventing transfusion-transmitted hepatitis.

Main Methods:

  • 147 patients receiving blood transfusions were prospectively studied.
  • Screening included Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-Hepatitis B core (anti-HBc), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) before and after transfusion.
  • Hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV) screening was performed on the last 36 patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) associated PTH incidence was 3.8% (5/131).
  • Non-A, non-B hepatitis (NANBH) associated PTH incidence was 2.7% (3/110).
  • Higher transfusion volume correlated with increased PTH incidence.

Conclusions:

  • Implementing anti-HBc and ALT screening for all blood donors is crucial to prevent PTH (HBV and NANBH).
  • Including anti-HCV screening in blood donors can further enhance transfusion safety.
