Summary

Individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP) exhibit altered postural control during prolonged standing. Their reduced sway and increased sway post-task suggest sensory-motor deficits contributing to persistent back pain.

Background:

  • Prolonged standing is linked to low back pain in workers.
  • Postural control in individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP) during prolonged standing remains understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare postural control during prolonged standing between CLBP subjects and healthy controls.
  • To investigate the effects of prolonged standing on postural sway in CLBP.

Main Methods:

  • Center of pressure (COP) data collected from 12 CLBP patients and 12 healthy controls using a force plate.
  • Analysis of COP sway parameters (RMS, speed, frequency) during quiet and prolonged standing (30 min).

Main Results:

  • CLBP subjects showed reduced antero-posterior sway and fewer postural changes during prolonged standing compared to controls.
  • CLBP subjects exhibited increased COP RMS, speed, and frequency after prolonged standing, unlike controls.

Conclusions:

  • CLBP individuals may have impaired sensory-motor function affecting postural control.
  • Altered responses during prolonged standing could contribute to CLBP persistence or recurrence.
  • Quantifying postural changes during prolonged standing may identify individuals with postural control deficits.
